The Wrench

‘No, no, I can’t tell you everything. Either I tell you about the country or else I tell you what happened. But, in your place, I’d pick what happened, because its a good story. Then, if you really want to write it down, you can work on it, grind it, hone it, deburr it, hammer it into shape, and you’ll have a good story. And, even if I am younger than you a lot of stories have happened to me. Maybe you’ll guess the country anyway, and that’ll be all right, but if I tell you where it was, I’ll get into trouble: the people there are nice but they’re kind of touchy.’

Primo Levi
